GSRIyaz is a free app with collection of tools built for Sikh Gurmat Sangeet enthusiasts.
Initial release of GSRIyaz app includes following five tools. We plan on adding more tools in future. If you have any suggestions for any following tools, or any new ideas, please us at gsriyazapp@gmail.com
The Translator tool allows you to select one of the 31 raags from Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the scale (such as C#, D#, A#, and so on) and it shows Aaroh and Avroh of the raag in the selected scale.
This tool is useful for instrument tuning or for quick reference of notes in the raag.
The Notes2Raag tool shows the raags that make use of the provided three or more notes.
Listen to the audio clip and try to figure out the raag used - learning by listening!
An important aspect of music education - listen and recognize sur or taal!
The Sur Abhyas tool allows you to generate random sequences from the notes/phrases provided.
The Alankars tool can be used to build and practice alankars based on the notes selected.
The Layakaari tool allows you to practice the concepts of taal jaatis and chhands. For a given phrase of surs, this tool can generate random sequences of notes in selected jaati (for example, 3-3-2 or 4-4 for a given phrase of 8 notes).
GSRIyaz app is designed & developed by Ishmeet Singh, Intern Gurmat Sangeet Research Internship Summer 2023, with support from Bhai Harlove Singh.

Ishmeet Singh is starting senior year at high school in Fall 2023. He has been learning Gurmat Sangeet for over 5 years. He learns vocals from Bhai Harlove Singh and Dilruba from Bhai Manjeev Singh.
He successfully completed Gurmat Sangeet Research Internship 2023 with Honors and was awarded $1000 scholarship. As part of the Internship project, Ishmeet used his programming skills and concepts that he learned during intership, to build GSRIyaz, a simple multi-platform app (runs on Android and iOS) using Flutter. Feedback provided by the internship instructor Bhai Harlove Singh played a critical role to make this app useful for any Gurmat Sangeet enthusiast.

Harlove Singh has been doing keertan for over 10 years. His father, Surinderpal Singh, was a keertaniya by profession. At home he was always exposed to a keertan oriented environment which further motivated him to start learning keertan for himself.
He feels that the raags in gurmat sangeet are a valuable treasure that we are not bringing enough light onto. He thinks it is critical for us to do as much of our part as we can in preserving these raags and bring more attention to them to avoid any dilution of gurmat sangeet. He has taught Gurmat Sangeet to students all over the United States since around 2014. He has recorded and published all 62 raags of SGGS ji on various online platforms including Spotify, iTunes, etc. In his undergraduate studies, he focused on the effects of raags on the mind. Having presented this research at various academic conferences, he has also taught an upper division psychology course at UC Riverside focusing on Raag therapy and mental health.
